Senior Laura Garcia began drawing in eight grade. At that time, it was just an art class she initially took for high school credit. She soon discovered it wasn’t like any class she’s ever taken. “From the moment I walked in, I was amazed because it felt like a whole new world, there is a little bit of everything,” she said.

This past weekend, Laura participated in the annual PSJA Draw on the Spot contest. For the third year in a row, she placed in the top 20. This time, Laura placed third overall, with artists participating from all four high schools. She earned a letterman patch for the accomplishment.

“I competed in a still life drawing, in where I focused on three things: the flower, a butterfly, and a hat,” Garcia, said. “I’m really proud of how it came out, even though I did it in such a short time.”

Ms. Rodriguez, her eighth grade teacher inspired her to pursue drawing in high school.

“When I started drawing, she told me ‘you have so much potential,’ which got me so excited because I never thought that I was good in a hobby,” Garcia said.
