Wolverine Tennis Named Bi-District Champions

The team also named Tri-City Champs

November 27, 2018

On October 16th, the mighty Wolverine tennis team won the bi-district champions title in a match against Edcouch Elsa’s tennis team. This was more than a win, but a landmarking victory as this was the first bi-district win in PSJA Memorial’s history.

“I’m very proud of all of my players for coming together to win against a very competitive team,” Coach Frank Zepeda, said.

Leading up to the game against Edcouch, coach Zepeda prepared his team through rigorous practices on the tennis court and with the tough matches that the tennis team had already played and won against great teams. The game itself was very intense but with every player on the team mentally focused, they were able to claim victory for our high school with an impressive score of 18 – 1.

Despite playing with school history on the line, players enjoyed the match and tried not to think negatively. They believed that focusing solely on the pressure of the game could potentially hurt their ability to play their best, and so their approach to the game was light-hearted but determined.

I played for myself because I knew that the pressure would change how I played, so I tried my best to just play for my love of the sport,” Katarina Briones, senior, said.

After this win, the tennis team will start individual tournaments where the players will get paired up with an opponent from another school. If the player wins a match, they get to advance to the next match with a different opponent. Every win adds points to the team’s total score. To train for this players will continue working hard and practicing with Coach Zepeda.

Would have like to seen other sports out there that are working hard and trying to bring to their parents, their school, and themselves honor. What about Golf, football, cross country? spread your wings.
