PSJA Memorial’s HOSA, Spanish Club, and GROWL club are hosting toy drives. National Honor Society will honor donations as two hours per toy.

Although these clubs will donate the toys to separate drives, they each had the same mindset of giving children an unforgettable Christmas year. HOSA will donate their toys to Edinburg Children’s Hospital, meanwhile GROWL club and the Spanish club will contribute to the Alamo Police department’s drive–where they will distribute to Alamo children in need.

Personal experiences have influenced group sponsors to organize these gift drives.

“When my daughter was hospitalized in Corpus and diagnosed with epilepsy I was devastated. With the medical bills and holidays right around the corner, I felt as if the world was crashing down on me. I wasn’t the only parent though, I noticed many others were in the same situation: sometimes even worse. So as things elevated and I became a sponsor for HOSA, I knew I had to find a way to help those families and especially the children that are struggling, so I thought why not host a toy drive?” Christy Zambrano, HOSA sponsor, said.

The Spanish Club and GROWL Book Club hoped to obtain at least 50 presents to donate. As of December 19th, they donated over 150 toys to the police department.

“When I was growing up my family didn’t have much money, so I know how it feels to not have a Christmas. I really hope we can get as much donations as possible, so we can put a big smile on those children faces and not let them go through a gift-less Christmas.” Maria Mora-Ohia, Spanish Club sponsor, said.

Many students have participated in this toy drive and have the same intentions of providing children with the best Christmas ever.

“I remember as a little boy I always wanted toys for Christmas, and if I didn’t get at least one I would be a little bitter. But now that I grown and mature I realized what I had taken for granted. Now I want to help others, especially those who are unable to provide gifts to their kids.” Isaac Hernandez, junior, said.
